Starting Kindergarten
Starting Kindergarten is an exciting milestone, and at Thurgoona Public School we want every child to begin their school journey feeling happy, confident and excited to belong. Our welcoming transition and orientation program gives children plenty of opportunities to explore their new school, meet our caring teachers, make new friends and become familiar with Kindergarten routines before their very first day. We also work closely with parents and carers, providing information, practical advice and opportunities to connect with our staff and school community. By the time the big day arrives, our goal is for every child to walk through the gates feeling safe, supported and ready to learn, play and thrive.
Before your child starts Kindergarten
Parent/Carer Information Session
Starting school is a big milestone for children and their families. The transition between learning environments can be both challenging and exciting. At Thurgoona Public School, we hold a parent/carer information session each year, generally in September. This session provides valuable insights into our school’s programs, routines, and support services. It’s a great opportunity for parents to ask questions, meet key staff members, and learn how to best support your child’s transition to school. We encourage all parents to participate and become familiar with our welcoming school community.
Kindergarten Orientation Program
Our Kindergarten orientation program is designed to welcome new students, support a smooth transition, and help families become familiar with our school community. Orientation sessions run over four weeks and offer the opportunity to meet teachers, explore classrooms, and engage in fun learning activities. We look forward to meeting our new Kindergarten families and ensuring a confident, happy start to school.
Preparing for Kindergarten
Parents and caregivers can help prepare their child for Kindergarten by encouraging them to:
- write their name in lowercase letters
- get dressed independently
- pack, unpack, and carry their school bag
- wear a hat for outdoor play
- prepare for eating breaks
- practice social skills
- tidy up after themselves
- use the toilet independently
- maintain personal hygiene

What to expect in Kindergarten
Learning and development
Kindergarten follows the NSW curriculum. Children build early skills in literacy, numeracy, creative arts, health and physical activity, science and technology. Learning through play also supports social, emotional and academic growth.
Daily routines
Children learn routines such as morning arrival, snack and lunch breaks, lining up, using bubblers and moving safely around the school. Teachers guide children as they settle in, but practising at home helps.
Best Start Assessment
At the start of the year, all Kindergarten children take part in the Best Start Assessment. This is a friendly, one-on-one assessment where teachers learn about your child’s literacy and numeracy skills. It is not a test and needs no preparation.
Kindergarten Buddy Program
Kindergarten students are paired with older students to assist them feel welcome and supported as they settle into school. Buddies spend time together on fun activities, building friendships and confidence. This connection helps younger students learn school routines and fosters a caring, inclusive school community.
Kindergarten events
Kindergarten is filled with special events, excursions, incursions and celebrations that make each year memorable and fun. Highlights include our colourful Easter Hat and Book Week Parades and the '100 Days of Kindergarten' celebration, marking a milestone of their learning journey. These exciting activities build a strong sense of community, encourage creativity, and make school a joyful experience for every child.
Dedicated teachers
Our dedicated teachers are passionate about early childhood education and creating a supportive, welcoming environment for every student. They guide, encourage, and nurture children as they learn, helping each child build confidence and reach their potential.
Classrooms and play areas
Our Kindergarten classrooms are filled with engaging resources to support early learning and creativity. Children enjoy bright, welcoming spaces and access to a range of materials and activities. Outside our playground space offers nature-inspired spaces and a variety of play equipment to support both fine and gross motor skill development. Children can climb, balance and explore, while also enjoying imaginative and hands-on activities that encourage creativity and social interaction in an inviting, natural environment.
