Student opportunities and activities
At Thurgoona Public School, we offer a variety of programs in the classroom and across the school to help students build new skills, make friends and explore new interests.
Our programs include:
- school sport and inter-school competitions, including school and zone carnivals, gala days and PSSA team sports
- creative and performing arts groups and showcases, including Eisteddfod competitions
- cultural and language activities
- excursions and incursions, including overnight and day experiences
- public speaking and debating, including the Premiers Debating Competition
- lunchtime clubs, including chess, drama, choir, dance and coding
- student leadership opportunities, including Year 6 leader positions and Student Representative Council (SRC)
- activities that support high potential and gifted learners, including spelling bee competitions.

Our extra-curricular highlights
Debating and public speaking
Students can develop their thinking, communication and teamwork skills through debating and public speaking. They also have the chance to compete in local and state events including the Albury/Wodonga Eisteddfod and The Premiers Debating Competition.
Creative and performing arts
Our drama, music and art programs help students be creative and express themselves. Students have the opportunity to participate in drama, dance, choir, chess and coding activities. They showcase their skills in various competitions, at the Albury/Wodonga Eisteddfod, at community and school events and during assemblies.
Trips and excursions
Our students enjoy getting out of the classroom to explore, learn and try new things. These experiences help them grow, build confidence and see how their learning connects to the world.
All year levels participate in either half day, full day or overnight excursions.
Sporting opportunities
Our school offers a wide variety of sporting opportunities for students, including participation in inter-school competitions, including school and zone carnivals, gala days and PSSA team sports. These activities promote teamwork, fitness and school spirit, giving students a chance to develop their skills and enjoy healthy, active lifestyles.
Student leadership opportunities
Our school offers a range of leadership opportunities for students to develop confidence and responsibility. These include the Student Representative Council (SRC) and Year 6 leader positions, including captains and sports captains. Through these roles, students learn teamwork, communication, and decision-making while contributing positively to our school community.
